Red Swamp Crayfish in the Pool
A few red swamp crayfish were discovered in our community pool at Thomas H. Gentry Community Center recently. This was a surprise to all of us! After checking with the Hawaii Invasive Species Council, we learned that these crayfish were purposefully introduced into the Hawaii ecosystem in the 1920s and are now widespread across all the main islands.
Because they’re so well established, the State does not have an active program to manage or control this non-native species. They recommend their simple removal when they appear. Our staff will continue to watch for and remove any crayfish found in or around the pool.
